If you're a hopeless romantic who's been discouraged while searching for perfect Italian food, you're not alone.
The search is sometimes long, and the way there can be paved with sticky pasta, mealy breadsticks and overpriced, heavily breaded eggplant parmesan.
But when you're truly ready to fall head-over-heels for an Italian restaurant, head to Legends of the North Shore. You'll find fresh pasta, tender meats, homemade soups, top-quality vegetables and superior home-baked breads and pizzas that will keep you coming back for years to come.
Their food is served in a casual, homey atmosphere that's still polished enough for a first date – but the biggest surprise on the Legends menu could be the low prices.
What can we say? It was love at first bite.
We started with the Greens and Beans appetizer ($6.95), a savory take on the traditional escarole and cannellini beans with garlic, and Legends' plentiful serving of mussels ($7.95), which arrived bathed in a full-bodied, perfectly-balanced marinara sauce.
Next, we tried the Spaghetti Fagioli ($9.95), a streamlined "pasta fazul" (with beans) dish that leaves the traditional chunky pasta behind and adds some cooked greens for flavor.
To fill out the meal, we also ordered the Filet Saltimbocca ($19.95), a carefully seasoned steak dressed with a smear of tangy, soft cheese. The name literally means "jumps in your mouth" – a name it was tender enough to earn.
We also devoured an oven-crisped Pizza Norma ($14), a house specialty decorated with roasted red peppers, artichokes, gouda and mozzarella cheeses, and garlic.
After a meal like that, we felt like we had just watched a whole Puccini opera – but we still couldn't say no to Legends' fresh desserts: a heavenly slice of coconut cream pie ($5.95) covered with a light cloud of meringue and a large, rich serving of deep-dish apple pie ($5.95) with a side of gourmet vanilla ice cream.
Legends may be the hardest-working Italian restaurant in Pittsburgh. In addition to all the fabulous, affordable food, you can expect impeccable service from waiters who are prompt, friendly and even witty. Who could ask for anything more?
Our rating: 5 out of 5 dots, given by two very enthusiastic diners who left satisfied.
